Your Oberhof

What connects me to Oberhof is my proximity to Suhl and, of course, the wonderful and successful years in bobsleighing at ASK Oberhof. But also the confrontation in competitive sport with its complexity, the striving for top performance, the cooperation with coaches, scientists, many sympathetic people in the environment and, of course, the optimisation and confrontation with the technology.

What was your sporting career like?

From an early age, my interests lay in musical and sporting activities. I took drum and guitar lessons, played drums in the Andreas Lorenz Swingtett from Auma at the age of 15 and wanted to become a professional musician and study in Weimar. From 1967 onwards, I sporadically took part in athletics, cycling in the "Little Peace Tour", ski jumping and cross-country skiing, and also played football and handball (a total of about 40 medals in district and county sports tournaments in the Gera district). During my vocational training as a precision mechanic with A-levels from 1972-1975, I got to know Arthur Linß, a successful LA coach in the SC Motor Jena, at the district partakiade in Gera in 1973 (3 x gold, 1 x silver in sprint, long jump and 4-fight), through the activities of my former sports teacher Rudi Wagner from Auma, who got me enthusiastic about the decathlon. Started competitive sports at the age of 18 in the SC Motor Jena, as a decathlete until 1981 (coaches: Arthur Linß, Hans-Jürgen Hammer)Parallel to competitive sports, from 1976, studied at the DHFK Leipzig, successfully graduating as a sports teacher.1981-1988 Bobsled athlete in the two-man and four-man bobsleds at the ASK Oberhof (coaches: Raimund Bethge, Erich Enders)

Who are your role models?

In terms of sport, I don't have any particular role models, but it was my motto to adopt the decisive characteristics from everyone! Apart from that, my parents, among others, who worked hard all their lives as farmers, who always put the family in the centre and who taught me to always keep my feet on the ground!

What was the most emotional moment of your sporting career?

Of course, the double success at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, including the atmosphere, experiences and of course the unforgettable victory ceremonies with the anthem!

What was the biggest sporting disappointment for you?

Not being nominated for the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow in the decathlon.

What are your goals for the future?

I would like to stay healthy and active for a long time, do more for my fitness and continue to pursue my hobby, music. Of course, I also want to spend more time with my family!
