Your Oberhof
I grew up here in Oberhof, went to school and did my sport here for 20 years. Furthermore, I was a member of the sports support group at Grenzadler from 2003-2013. So I got to know a lot of nice people here and experienced many nice and funny moments.
What was your sporting career like?
I started in Nordic combined at SC Motor Zella-Mehlis in 1992. In the 5th grade I changed to the sports high school in Oberhof and was able to celebrate my first national successes in Nordic combined and ski jumping. When I switched to ski jumping, I went through the classic D/C, C and B squads of the DSV, became German Youth Champion in the age group 16 and competed in my only Junior World Championships in Karpacz in 2001. From 2001-2012, I was mostly in the World Cup, with alternating highs and lows ;)
Who is your role model?
As a child I usually had many favourite jumpers from Japan (H. Saito, H. Miyahira etc.) or from Finland (A.P. Nikkola or J. Ahonen), but interestingly no one from Germany ;) (Why ever?)
What was the most emotional moment of your sporting career?
Many would now expect me to write the gold medal in Salt Lake City in 2002. But at the age of 18 it's rather difficult to realise the exact significance. One of my best moments was my 4 victories in a row in the COC 2008. When you can jump for victories, ski jumping is really fun.
What was the biggest sporting disappointment for you?
Being eliminated from the team at the 2009 World Championships in Liberec, even though we were medal candidates, and my missed chance to go to the World Championships in Oslo in 2011.
What are your goals for the future?
Of course, to gain a foothold in the working world, be it as a teacher or as a coach. And to be able to experience many more beautiful moments.
... because it is always nice to come to Oberhof, meet family and friends, enjoy nature, go skiing or watch the current athletes perform.
