Gehlberg, 545 - 983 m above sea level, is a district of the independent town of Suhl and is a state-recognised resort town with approx. 500 inhabitants. Gehlberg is surrounded by the highest elevations in Thuringia, such as Großer Beerberg (983 m), Teufelskreise (967 m), Fichtenkopf (944 m) or Sachsenstein (915 m). The most popular mountain of all is probably the local mountain of Gehlberg - the Schneekopf (978 m).The village of Gehlberg was founded in 1645 by the settlement of a glassworks. Glass production shaped the life of the village for centuries. The small village offers summer recreation and winter fun in almost untouched nature and a healthy low mountain climate.The whole range of hiking, walking, mountain biking, horseback riding, climbing (climbing wall at the Schneekopf tower), skiing and snowshoeing as well as downhill skiing is possible here. You can explore the most beautiful spots of the charming surroundings with a walk or even a challenging hike.In the Gehlberg Hiking Park, boards inform you about the special features of the respective area. Enjoy nature with all your senses, e.g. on the nature and adventure trail, the challenging poacher's trail or the circular tours around the Schneekopf.In Gehlberg you are not only "on top" in the Thuringian Forest, in the immediate vicinity of the Rennsteig, but also "in the middle"! The central location of the village in the immediate vicinity of the well-known winter sports centre of Oberhof and culturally and historically interesting towns such as Erfurt, Weimar, Suhl or Arnstadt offers countless opportunities for excursions with interesting experiences for young and old, young and old.
