Oberschönau (565 - 900 m above sea level) with its approx. 850 inhabitants is an idyllic mountain village in the middle of the Thuringian Forest, where the "Green Heart of Germany" beats, only 10 km away from the internationally renowned winter sports resort of Oberhof. The legendary Rennsteig trail leads past the resort of Oberschönau at a distance of about 3 km.The traditional hiking and winter sports village was first mentioned in a document in 1585. The abundance of forests attracted lumberjacks and charcoal burners as the first settlers to the village, which lies deep in the valley. 800 - 900 m high mountains such as the Hermannsberg (867 m), the Ruppberg (865 m), the Hohe Möst (887 m) and the Donnershauk (894 m) surround the village. The Rennsteig trail runs along the crest of the Donnershauk. The free-standing rocks, such as the "Twelve Apostles", the Möst rocks and the "High Stone" are unique. For centuries, the life of the inhabitants was determined by small iron and metal crafts. This was the home of nail smiths and pliersmiths. Hammer blows became the pulse of life in the valley of the Hasel.
