Nothing comes from nothing.

Your Oberhof

Oberhof has been my training place from 2006 until the end of my career.

What was your sporting career like?

I got into luge at the age of 9 at RC Blankenburg through my little brother.

When I was 14 (1997), I went to the sports school in Oberwiesenthal, where I graduated in 2002. Afterwards, I joined the sports support group of the German Armed Forces.

In the 2003/2004 season, I got my first World Cup assignments and was immediately allowed to compete in my first World Championship in Nagano (8th place).

The following year was an apprenticeship year for me, but the following Olympic year went all the better. I surprisingly qualified for the 2006 Olympic Games and even came home with the bronze medal.

From then on, I raced steadily in World Cups and championships.

My two coaches in Blankenburg: Helmut Zimmermann and Hans-Werner Stollberg, my coaches in Oberwiesenthal: Andreas Estel and Wilfried Jüchert and last but not least my coaches in Oberhof: Bernhard Glass and Norbert Hahn, as well as my long-time mechanic from Oberwiesenthal: Wolfgang Scholz.

Who are your role models?

Armin Zöggler

What was the most emotional moment of your sporting career?

The most emotional moment was the Olympic victory in Vancouver, because it is simply the greatest success you can achieve in an Olympic sport and I have been working towards it for 4 years. But closely following this moment is my 5th individual World Championship title in Innsbruck in 2017, as I was able to achieve it after a long dry spell and health problems, 10 years after my 1st World Championship title in the same place.

What was the biggest sporting disappointment for you?

The biggest disappointment was the 2018 Olympic Games. I was in 2nd place after 3 out of 4 heats and fell back to 4th place in the last heat.

What are your goals for the future?

For my professional future, I have resolved to "put childcare in the Bundeswehr on a new footing" and thus create added value for the children of the soldiers.

... because this is the perfect place to train. Whether professional or amateur athlete, everyone will find a lot of offers very close to each other here.
